How to trade on football markets on a betting exchange

Browsing Posts published in March, 2007

I was greened up with 2 football games I was working with yesterday and I decided to go back in to increase the money on the table and ended up losing half of the bank.

One of the ideas behind this site is that I tell the truth about how it is going and yesterday was a poor day by anyone’s  standards. There are lessons to be learned from it and  hopefully you can benefit from the details.

Basically I got greedy and decided that I should get more. I should have been happy with the returns that were already there and I tried to push it with football games that were not the best to begin with. The Braga vs Naval wasn’t so bad although the liquidity was lower than the Premiership games or Champions league. But The Northern Irish game between Linfield and Derry I should have left it when I had a small locked in profit there. It was made even worse by the fact that I could see how the goals were happening, normally I follow the scores on one of the livescore sites but This game didn’t make it above the radar. Strange really that it should be  on Betfair as an InPlay  game and not on the other sites.  The game I would have preferred to work with was the Betis vs Sevilla game, but I couldn’t even see it in Betfair at all and it was the Copa del Rey too.

OK thats lesson one -  Chose the games better.

Lesson two is don’t get greedy. There were moments when I could have cut my losses and instead of losing 3o euro I could have only been down by 9 euro. That would have been acceptable, more or less. At 85 minutes into the game I thought I could leave the bet in place and the game would finish at 1-1 and at the end of the day I would be down only 2 or 3 euro. Didn’t Braga get one more goal in the 89th minute and spoil my plans. Also when I was making my choice ant 85 minutes I could have greened up and had money off the game although only small.

There you go I’ll take the hard lessons and you can learn from them too.

At least I did have some consolation for the day in a couple more sales of affiliate software and one photo in Fotolia. One the day as a whole I am up but for Betfair I am down by 30 euros. Never mind I will build it back up again – Like I already have done twice.

Betdaq

Now and then there are problems with Betfair and it makes sense to have some sort of back up. For example if you have something on the under 2.5 goals market and something happens to Betfair and you can’t get on a bet to lay off some of your liability. Then the thing do do is have some funds in BetDaq and just go there and lay off the bet or part of the bet. The liquidity isn’t as good as in Betfair but it is growing all of the time. I do know of some people that use Betdaq only, such as Ray of the Sports trader and Gavin of the Purple Layer Blog

Well I didn’t do much today because of it being fathers day and there was a family meal out and good few of the games had finished by the time I got home. As I write I have some money on the Madrid vs Gimnastic game. I put some on before half time and greened up just before the first goal was scored. At 80 minutes I was tempted to put on just 4 Euro because the odds were good and rather than being greened up I thought there was not a huge likelyhood of 2 more goals in the last 10 mins. The was one scored and it looks like the game has now finished and I have got the extra profit off the game.

See the video showing how to do the under 2.5 goals thing on Betfair. Wizardcast 26
As a technique it is worth considering. Be cautious and take just a couple of ticks at the start of a game and get greened up so that you profit is locked in for the larger portion of the game.

Then at 75 or 80 mins if it is 0-0 put on a back bet for under 2.5 goals and unlock the portion of the money that is sitting unclaimed on the game going over 2.5 goals. Seems to be working well for me so far.

Using Betty to place the trades

This is today’s work
Real Madrid v Gimnastic : Over/Under 2.5 goals – as explained above
Everton v Arsenal : Over/Under 2.5 goals – bet placed late in the game
Deportivo v Getafe : Over/Under 2.5 goals – bet placed late in the game
Zaragoza v Atl Madrid : Over/Under 2.5 goals

There is another game starting in a minute – Sevilla vs Celta might be worth doing something on it. I have put 20 on at odds of 1.82 and I have placed an order to lay off 5 euro at 1.79 – which just got matched…. So I will place another order for a fiver at 1.75…. OK the order is in and it will get matched in 4 ticks
6 mins into the game and the odds on the lay side are up and down a little – went to 1 tick away then back to 5 ticks and now at 3 ticks to getting filled.
7 mins and that second lay off got filled – I now have a liability of 10 with a possibility to win 8.70 if the game stays under 2.5 goals – odds now at 1.73 I will place an order on the lay side again for a fiver at 1.66 – now 9 minutes into the game and the 3rd lay order just got filled. liability of 5 euro and 5.40 on the under 2.5 goals and I could green up for 1.50
Which is what I have just done – 12 minutes into the game and I get 1.50 whatever happens. Remember I will look at the game now at about 75 /80 mins and see if I can free some of the greened up money.

The first football game I did today worked out fine and then didn’t I get a game that presented a goal in the first 5 minutes. I put more money on so that I could lay off and left it for a while. I was thinking that I would get away with it and I would get rid of the 15 euro liability at half time when the 3rd goal goes in and confirms a loss.

But I persevered and with the under 4.5  market with the same game and with small bets on other games I managed to bring back a poss loss of 15 to a loss of only 0.68 euro. Not too bad really. I think that having an escape plan for when things don’t go just right is most important.

Oh well Saturday tomorrow and a whole pile of games to look at.

Of course I was using BetIE to place the bets….

Easy trading on Betfair using Betty the Betting Bot

On Saturday I had a poor day of trading, I just picked the wrong game right from the start and there were early goals which messed it all up. I just could catch up with myself for the rest of the day. Didn’t trade on Monday but looking at the games afterwards it was perhaps good that I didn’t. That will happen from time to time that there is a spate of games that have quite a few goals in them.

Wednesday was a really good day for trading on the football using Betty the betting software. I did the Premiership games with Chelsea winning at Man City and Arsenal winning at Aston Villa. I got some profit built up at the start of the game and greened up the in the last five minutes I saw a chance to take more money off if I backed the unders again. There was 3 minutes to go and it was 0-1 and fortunately it worked out although the extra time seemed like an eternity.

I got money off the Werder Bremen, Osasuna, Spurs, and the Leverkusen games. They were well spaced out so that I could do it. 15 mins between the start of some of the games and it just worked nice.

The profit for the day was 7.47 euro which is a 19% increase in the days bank. So I am nearly back right again after Saturday’s disaster day of picking them. I know it is a bit up and down but it is bound to be a little tight with such a small bank.

Funny old day today. I just couldn’t get it right on Betfair today and I have ended up down by 12.41 Euro. I just chose the wrong games to work with. I did the Bayern game which went haywire in the first minute with a goal. I didn’t spot it straight away and if I had I would have backed it again for a tenner. then done some laying off to bring it back into being a money maker. But as it was I did the back bet but the odds had already dropped some and I was laying off too quickly. Later in the game I was trying to get the liability down but not being successful. I should have been less panicky I think.

I had some money made on the Celtic game with the unders market and knowing now how the game finished 0-0 at 90 mins I should have left that run some more. The I got the notion to try the football cash generator technique on the game and that didn’t work for me either.

I did manage to pull back some money in the under 3.5 goals market on the Bayern game and then a little on the under 1.5 goals market in the Celtic Extra time. I didn’t want to risk too much but I did make the loss for the day a little less.

Oh well I learned a bit more this evening……

Trading on the under over 2.5 goals market again today mostly, with a small scalp of the market on the under 4.5 goals on the Chelsea late in the game. It was 2-1 to Chelsea and only 7 mins max to the end of the game including extra time. I put on a bet of €10 to scoop up a small 60 cents.

I used the Equalise Profit button in Betty

I will keep doing the safe small profits until I have a good size bank to trade with again. I made less that 1 euro on the Chelsea game because I wasn’t greened up when the first goal went in. I had started off with a back bet of €5 on the unders and then after the first goal went in I put on another €5 at 2.62. I laid off a fiver of it @ 2.38. and then laid off some more down to 1.92. The game ended 2-1 to Chelsea so laying off was a good idea.

On the Liverpool vs Barcelona game I was sad to see my team go out to Liverpool but at least I made some money on the game. I started off backing the unders for 20 @ 1.9 and I saw that it had gone up so I put on more @ 1.93.

I layed off 20 euro @1.88 then fivers @ 1.85, 1.82, 1.75, When I had finishd laying it all off I used the Equalise Profit button in Betty and it left me with a couple of Euro whatever happened.

Again small money but 5% increase of the betting bank which is a good result.

Nice way to make some fairly easy money trading on Betfair using Betty the Betting Bot

I am working on the next video in the series and I will show you how to set things up to trade with Betty and also how to use the hedging tool to do what I was doing with small trades using the scalping ladder. Here is Wizardcast 26 which gives you the bare bones of the technique.

I posted up the video today showing how to do the under 2.5 goals thing on Betfair. Wizardcast 26

Today I am making money on the preston vs Southampton game. it is at 65 minutes in the match and I have my small profit already sewn up and in the bag. The score at the moment is 1 – 1 and who know or who cares if there is another goal. Not me anyway.

I did something on the Motherwell vs Hearts game, now on that one I didn’t equalise it so I might not make any money there if there is another goal. Six mins to go and maybe I could still equalise it – had a look and there s now only 3 mins to the final whistle so I might as well leave it. I had a look and the soccerstats.com site said 90 mins and ther e was still 1.25 to back the under 2.5. So I put a back bet of 4 euro on there and I am hoping there is not too much injury time. UPDATE – Full Time and no more goals – Sweet !!!

I posted up the video today showing how to do the under 2.5 goals thing on Betfair. Wizardcast 26

I have been trading in learning mode for a few days now using Bet IE and having some success, notably with the under 2.5 goal market. So I had some funds to work with I decided to throw them in the mix making a deposit into my Betfair account. I only had 50 euro available but it was something.

on the bright side it was 2.9% increase in the bank

So today I backed the under 3.5 goal market in the Real Madrid game when there was 10 minutes to go. It was 1-1 at that stage which is why I did the 3.5 and not the under 2.5 . I put a fiver on to start with @ 1.13 and then another tenner on @ 1.03. Not a huge amount to win but got to start somewhere.

Then I did the Huelva vs Athletico Madrid under 2.5 goals at the start of the game. I backed unders @ 1.62 and laid it later @ 1.56 I was using Betty the Bot with the automatic hedging turned off on this one. So I left it as a free bet on the unders. The game ended 1-0 so that was alright.

The profit for the day was a patry 1.47 euro, but on the bright side was 2.9% increase in the bank. If you know anything about compounding even 1% a day is marvelous when compounded.

Looking forward to working a couple of football matches tomorrow with Betty the Betting Bot

Trading my way onwards and upwards.
